Minimal Sedation Dentist

Minimal Sedation Dentistry

At 101st Adult Dentistry, we know that some people have a strong aversion to going to the dentist. And while we strive to make our cleaning and procedures as pain-free and stress-free as possible, some people are prone to feeling anxiety and even fear when they think about getting an oral checkup. In some cases, this fear can cause them to delay making dental appointments for months or even years, which can increase their risks of developing cavities and other serious dental problems.

Estimates show that around 10 to 15 percent of all Americans delay or avoid dental appointments due to fear and anxiety. Because this is such a common condition, we offer our current and future patients several methods for overcoming this and starting down a path towards excellent oral and dental health and a beautiful smile.

Oral Sedation and Nitrous Oxide Sedation

When you call our dental team to make an appointment, be sure to mention if you suffer from dental anxiety or phobia. The more information we have about your fear, including when it began and specific things that trigger, the easier it will be for us to provide a truly relaxing and anxiety-free experience.

One of the best ways to combat dental phobias is through sedation. We offer two types of sedation:

Oral sedation
For some patients, feeling nervous and anxious happens before they even arrive at the office. If that’s the case for you, we’ll prescribe an oral sedative that you can take around one hour before you arrive at our office. In addition, we’ll provide extra medication after you arrive to further enhance your comfort. The oral sedation therapy will help you feel relaxed before, during, and after the procedure. And while the medication is highly effective at reducing anxiety, it won’t put you to sleep, so you’ll still be able to communicate with your dentist.

Nitrous oxide
Also known as inhalation sedation, nitrous oxide sedation is administered via a small tube that’s placed under your nose. This nearly odorless gas will immediately begin to reduce your anxiety and create a feeling of calm. Nitrous oxide has been used for many years with an excellent safety track record. As with oral sedation therapy, you’ll be awake after receiving nitrous oxide and able to speak with your dentist throughout the procedure.
